Getting a headshot? Here’s how to prepare.

So you’ve booked your headshot session. Even if it’s a quick one for LinkedIn, you want to make sure to look your best! Here’s how to prep, way before you get to the studio.

Several days before your shoot:

  1. Sleep: You’ll feel better, you’ll look better and you’ll photograph better! I don’t need to tell you that sleep makes your skin look better, helps with any bags under your eyes, and leads to greater focus on set.
  2. Hydrate: Water is also key for optimal skin and wellbeing. It’s crazy how often we *forget* to drink enough water. Try to get at least the recommended 64 OZ for several days before shooting.
  3. Choose a few outfits: Give yourself and your photographer clothing options. Avoid loud patterns and super bright colors (like neon) that will take away from the point of the photo (your lovely face). Neutrals and jewel tones work wonderfully. And don’t forget to steam or iron your outfit the night before! Wrinkles in clothes (that don’t belong there) won’t look good in the final photo.

The day of your shoot:

  1. Hair: Your hairstyle can make or break your photo. If you have long locks, perhaps treat yourself to a blowout. If you’re a hair wizard, do it yourself. Whatever you do, the most important thing is that you love the way you look.
  2. Makeup: If you normally wear your makeup, go ahead and do what makes you feel good, with one little detail: avoid wearing anything too shiny, it can look weird in the photo.
